About Dr. Curtis
Dr. Amanda Curtis earned her Ph.D. in Health and Sport Studies from the University of Iowa in 2013. She also holds an M.S. Ed in Sports Science & Wellness Education from the University of Akron and a B.A. from Albion College in Physical Education and English. Dr. Curtis’s primary areas of interest involve issues of gender and physicality within the fields of sport history and sport sociology as well as representations of female athletes and physicality in the media. She also presents original research in these areas at various national and international academic conferences. She teaches courses within the Sport Studies curriculum such as: Gender, Sexuality and Sport; History of Sport in America; Sports in Education; Sport Sociology; Sport, Nationalism and Culture; and Sport Communication, among others. Dr. Curtis was recognized for her efforts in the classroom with the Ohio Magazine Excellence in Education award as well as the LEC Tibby for Faculty member of the year.

Lake Erie College offers a unique, interdisciplinary approach to sport that few other small colleges can offer. We offer both a Sports Management major as well as a Sports Studies major which allows the student to learn about sport through the path they find most interesting focusing either more on the business or cultural aspects of sport and the sport industry.
Ultimately either degree will prepare students to work in or out of the sport industry while also preparing those who wish to pursue graduate studies. We are able to combine a large university program with the small college experience.
